Collecte de fonds par MacMillan Family
In memory of Rick (Richard) Douglas MacMillan for perpetual care of his chosen resting place.
Born August 16, 1965, Rick passed suddenly at home in Edmonton on August 5, 2024, at the age of 58. Beloved husband of Cheryl (Blair), he was the son of Sherry MacMillan of Campbellton, New Brunswick, and the late James Doucet.
Rick spent his early life in Campbellton before joining the Canadian Armed Forces at 19. He served in Europe and at home in New Brunswick and Alberta with 8th Canadian Hussars, Lord Strathcona Horse (Royal Canadian) with overseas deployments in Germany and Bosnia. He was a seasoned “Blackhat” – an Advanced Armoured Gunner who soldiered in Leopard 1 Tanks and Coyote Armoured Reconnaissance Vehicles – before moving to reserves until 2009. He joined CN Rail after a successful 25 year military career and was Chief Mechanical Officer at the time of his death.
He and Cheryl married in a friends and family-filled ceremony at Jasper Park Lodge in 2023, with as many loved ones as he could entice to his favourite mountain resort. Rick was always happiest when surrounded by people he loved and he was Cheryl's rock.
Rick was truly an unforgettable character and charm was his usual opening move, especially if ‘gruff’ didn’t work. His full life afforded him experiences that he loved to share with others, and he could always be counted on for a good story, no matter the audience.
He adored - and was adored by - his maternal grandparents, the late Emery and Margaret (McLaughlin) MacMillan and most of the older residents of Dufferin Street in Campbellton. He built lifelong relationships with his military friends and there was no chance of being his neighbour without invitations to the back yard on any night he turned into a special event.
In addition to his wife Cheryl and mother Sherry, he is survived by brother Colin (Chris), sister Christine Stafford (Bruce), sisters-in-law Sherri Ashe (Jermane), Shannon Wolfe and brother-in-law, Brad Blair. He leaves sons Ian (Kayla) and Jamie of Fredericton, Jonathan Blair (Madison) and daughter Cheris Unrau (Chance) of Edmonton. Grandchildren Carson, Cooper, Remi, Sawyer, Grace, Dylan, Pearce, and Azalea-Rose.
Family was incredibly important to Rick and he was very close with aunt Jean Graham of Hamilton, Ontario, and cousins Chris and Jennifer Graham.
A service will be held on August 24 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Luke and St. John Chapel, Building #182, Mons Ave #161, Lancaster Park, AB.
Interment at a later date at the Rural Cemetery in Campbellton, New Brunswick, next to his grandfather.
