Background: For five years I have been traveling to Antigua Guatemala at the end of October to take part in Operation Walk Canada the (Guatemala) Mission. By traveling down and providing citizens with these life changing surgeries they would not otherwise have access to, it truly is a new beginning at life for many of our patients. Operation walk has been going to Guatemala since 2006. Since then they have provided about 916 total joint replacements. This would not be possible without the generous donations from Arthroplasty companies, as well as the surgeons, anesthetists, physiotherapists, nurses, translators, general volunteers and of course, our amazing team of organizers that deserve a lot of the credit. So why keep going back and remain a part of this? I believe being able to use a skill you already have acquired to help others is what feeds your soul and reignites the passion about why we chose the healthcare profession to begin with. Most of our patients come from very little, often traveling up to 12 hours just to be even considered for surgery. There is an extensive process to make sure every patient is well enough and screened 6 months prior, and then again pre-operatively. Last year we had a handful of people that were not able to have their surgeries based on new medical concerns. It was honestly so heart breaking for all of us involved having to turn these patients away after they thought they were going to have a new start at life. That is why it's important we go back year after year to re-visit previous patients and hopefully get as many done that is safely possible in our short weeks stay. Last year we completed 76 joints, some being bilateral (meaning one patient required both hips, or both knees done). There was a young lady we saw in her 40's who had been wheelchair bound for several years because her arthritis was so bad. After having Bilateral hip replacements, she was able to walk again. There really is no price tag you can attach to being part of something like that.
The Everest part:
After being part of Operation Walk Canada; I have become more and more appreciative of being able to give back each year. This is also why I don't take something like walking for granted. I will be hiking in Nepal, trekking through small villages and ending up at Everest Basecamp (17, 598 ft. ). The oxygen is thin and sometimes all you need to do is focus on putting one foot in front of another. Often times our patients can barely walk and have no access to the medical care they need to alleviate their pain, and the only thing that will work is a total joint replacement. We are so fortunate to have access to the healthcare that we do. Even though now more than ever, there is a major strain on our frontline healthcare system (ask any nurse), we are so privileged to have help when we need it. I know walking up the highest mountain in the world is going to come with some struggles, but if by doing this, it might help provide patients with the ability to walk again, it might make those tough days a little easier.
I would just like to say, thank you for taking the time to read this, and considering a donation to this life changing cause to those in need. No amount is too small Xx
