Born in San Francisco in 1942, Danny Grossman’s worldview was profoundly influenced by his parents, who were prominent social activists and strong supporters of the arts. He spent his youth roller skating and bicycling up and down the steep hills of San Francisco and scrambling up beachside cliffs inspired his acrobatic and daredevil style of dance. He loved the circus, Charlie Chaplin, Hollywood dancer Donald O’Connor, Rhythm and Blues, Jazz and Folk music. He was a cheerleader at Roosevelt Junior High with life-long friend and dance creator MargyJenkins. Much of his choreography reflects the social issues which surrounded him and the eclectic mixture of visual art and music to which he was exposed. By 1960 he was studying and performing with San Francisco's modern dancer and teacher, Gloria Unti. At a summer dance course at Connecticut College in 1963, he witnessed the works of AmericanModern Dance pioneers, as well as the soon to be renowned: Paul Taylor. He also met aspiring Canadian dancer, David Earle, who later co-founded the Toronto Dance Theatre in 1968. While at Connecticut College, Paul Taylor witnessed Danny dancing wildly at a student party and invited him to join his company in New York. He made his debut at the Little Theatre on Broadway in 1963. For the next 10 years, he danced and toured throughout the world with the Paul Taylor Dance Company. In 1973, Mr. Earle invited Danny to Toronto where he worked with the Toronto Dance Theatre as a guest artist and choreographer and joined the faculty of York University.

“My dance is mime that moves with the strength and physicality of a football player. Dance that is clear, concise, daring, and universal - not afraid of subject matter. I take the narrative from everything that I encounter from music to paintings, to ritual, to social issues. The themes relate directly to my life and the times in which we live. I am also an entertainer.” - Danny Grossman
“Profoundly influenced by the masks of tragedy and comedy, I have been choreographing works that deal with social and political issues, for 45 years. At the age of 79, I am appalled at the proliferation of weapons of destruction, devastation of the environment, and the climate crisis. How this will affect all life on earth is frightening! It is time for all people who believe the earth is not only the cradle of life, but the womb itself, to take action.” -Danny Grossman
