Hi, I'm Amber and I've been fighting Pancreatic NeuroEndocrine cancer for over 16 years now due to a rare familial condition called Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 1.
As of right now, there are very few treatments for my condition. I was only offered a huge life-changing surgery to remove most of my pancreas and my spleen in 2007 to try to fight the cancer from taking over my body. Now I go for yearly screening and scans to monitor the tumours I have in the remainder of my pancreas and other places in my body.
This year, I will be participating in the Virtual Canadian NeuroEndocrine Tumour Society fundraiser called "Hoofing it" where we are raising money for NeuroEndocrine cancer research.
You may recognize the zebra theme that this type of cancer uses because it is rare, but NeuroEndocrine cancer is actually now one of the fastest growing class of cancers. It can happen to anyone at any age in any part of the body and often goes undiagnosed for an average of 9 years because there isn't enough awareness about it. You may have heard about Steve Jobs or Aretha Franklin who both passed away from the same PNETs I am battling.
We need to continue to get this research underway to help future generations have better odds and more choices for fighting this cancer.
