SESSION 1: Mi’kma’kik Lobster Fishing

Saturday, February 20, 2021 – 11 AM to 1 PM, Atlantic Standard Time

Mi’kmaq Elder Terry Leblanc

An examination of the current issue of Mi’kmaq lobster fisheries and their foundation in the Mi’kmaki worldview and the historic Peace and Friendship treaties recorded in wampum belts and oral history.

 

SESSION 2: 1492 Land Back Lane Land Conflict

Saturday, March 20, 2021 – 10 AM to Noon, Eastern Daylight Savings Time

Oneida Elder Grafton Antone

An examination of the 1492 Land Back Lane land conflict in Caledonia beginning in 2020. From the wampum treaty making tradition to the 1784 Haldimand Proclamation we will examine the developments leading up to the current situation.

 

SESSION 3: Indigenous Child Welfare

Saturday, April 17, 2021 – 9 AM to 11 AM, Central Daylight Savings Time

Cree Elder Stan McKay Jr.

An examination of the overrepresentation of Indigenous children in the Child Welfare system and the underfunding of the same. Creative solutions from Indigenous initiatives will be featured.

 

SESSION 4: Indigenous People and Resource Development

Saturday, May 15, 2021 – 8 AM to 10 AM, Mountain Daylight Savings Time

Nakota Elder John Snow Jr.

An examination of the spectrum of Indigenous views on resource development and how these projects impact Indigenous communities. Employment and environmental concerns will be addressed.

 

SESSION 5: Traditional Lands and Environmental Protection

Saturday, June 19, 2021 – 8 AM to 10 AM, Pacific Daylight Savings Time

Gitxsan Elder Ray Jones

An examination of unceded Indigenous territories and traditional Indigenous duties to the lands and peoples. The long history of Indigenous resistance to colonial exploitation and the current vitality of Indigenous identity will be the focus here.

 

 

Sample Schedule

1. 9 AM to 9:50 AM – Background Segment

a. Introductions (10 minutes)

b. Historical foundation (20 Minutes) – A limited recitation of the historical background to the issue – dialogue of Elder and host

c. Culture teaching (20 minutes) – A foundational cultural dimension to the current issue of the Session – dialogue of Elder and host

d. Chat questions collected and then answered in the second hour

2. 9:50 AM to 10 AM Break

3. 10 AM to 11 AM – Culture Segment

a. Contemporary issue (30 minutes) – a recounting of the contemporary issue of the Session – dialogue of the Elder and host

b. Question and Answer (30 minutes) – Chat questions from first and second hour answered
