About Fundraiser
Fundraiser by University of Waterloo Orphan Sponsorship Program
The goal of this campaign organized by UWOSP is to raise $2600 for a pre and post-natal program to support Indigenous mothers and mothers-to-be, including women with housing and mental health needs, or who are fleeing domestic violence. These funds will contribute to providing housing support, counselling, food/clothing, access to employment, training and education, and other supports to pregnant Indigenous women who are at high risk of involvement in child welfare.
Indigenous women disproportionately face higher levels of gender-based violence and abuse in Canada. According to Statistics Canada, rates of spousal assault against Indigenous women are more than three times higher than those against non-Indigenous women. This is due to many interrelated factors like systemic racism and discrimination against Indigenous people, poor socioeconomic conditions and intergenerational trauma from residential school legacies.
The aid provided by this campaign will be directed to help Indigenous women and their young children in situations of domestic abuse as well as those who require mental health and housing support.

Where the money goes:
For the funds raised, 100% of all proceeds will go directly to the Tikinagan Program through Native Child and Family Services of Toronto, a registered Canadian Charitable Organization (Registration No. 131621765 RR 0001).
There are also processing fees involved on the CanadaHelps platform which would be 4% per one time donation, or approximately $100 overall for the purposes of the Tikinagan fundraiser. ~$2500 will directly go to Native Child and Family Services of Toronto, and ~$100 will go to CanadaHelps processing fees. The donor is receipted for the full amount of the donation regardless, but CanadaHelps takes a portion of the gift as a fee before it gets to Native Child.
