About Fundraiser
Fundraiser by Bryden Bone
I'm a marine conservation biologist who takes great pride in protecting our oceans. I came across the Back to the Sea Society in my first couple months in Halifax 3 years ago. I was volunteering at a conference and the opportunity to share my passion of marine biology with kids, using live animals in the Back to the Sea Society's touch tanks, was too good to pass up. The delight that hit their faces as they were able to watch a seastar crawl around ("they can move?!") was, in turn, a highlight of the conference for me.
Offering kids (and adults too) a tangible example of the ocean's diversity with which to anchor further learning is such an effective spark for kindling someone's interests. I think interest fosters caring and what better way to cultivate intrigue in the ocean than playing with some of the fascinating creatures that live in our own backyard? As we deal with many of the big, nasty problems that the ocean currently faces (like climate change, overfishing, and plastic pollution) we're going to need every ally we can get and maybe exposing someone to a living, breathing creature will inspire them to make conservation a part of their life. I'm constantly inspired by the ocean's amazing animals to do what I can to protect them and I think the Back to the Sea Society can be that trigger for many other young people.
To show my commitment to ocean health, youth education, and the Back to the Sea Society I'll be hiking the Cape Chignecto Coastal Trail on October 10th. This beautiful 53km trail features difficult climbs amongst the coastal cliffs of the Bay of Fundy. Although it is recommended to span your hike over 3-4 days I'll be attempting it in under 12 hours!
Help me make a difference in ocean health by supporting youth education!
***Thanks to everyone who has donated so far, we've already reached our initial goal! With 7 weeks to go let's aim higher!***
***Crushed the $1000 goal, I keep underestimating everyone's generosity! Still plenty of time to donate so let's move this up a couple notches***
***Got to $2700, so time to set a final goal and go hard for the the last few weeks before my run. $3300 is the new target and I've landed on October 10th as the run date. I've even recruited a pit crew which will come meet me at the finish line. Thanks again everyone!***
