About Fundraiser
Fundraiser by Ron Berezan
I love walking! I especially love walking on the mountain trails where I live. The Sunshine Coast Trail (SCT) in Tla'Amin territory (Powell River) is a world-renown hut to hut 180 km thru hike with over 20,000 feet of elevation gain https://sunshinecoast-trail.com/ . Hiking these trails keeps me well in mind and body and connects me to the stunning ecology that surrounds me.On June 4-6, I will attempt an "unsupported" Fastest Known Time (FKT) of the Sunshine Coast Trail. This means I will carry everything I need and will have no pacers, food drops or other support. You can read about FKT's here: https://fastestknowntime.com/guidelines.I will speed hike (not run) the trail and hope to complete it in less than 72 hours. If all goes well, I may even finish in under 59 hours - one hour for each year of my life! While there are currently supported men's and women's FKT's for the SCT, there are no unsupported FKT's.
I am fundraising for Miklat Recovery Society in Powell River - our only non-profit, charitable treatment centre in the region. Miklat offers amazing addiction recovery programs that are affordable to average folks, unlike the private centres which are exceedingly expensive. Miklat runs on a shoe string and stretches every dollar to the max. When I learned that they were taking men in treatment out on the trails as part of their recovery program, I knew I could fully get behind them. The funds we are raising together here will go towards the purchase of a van that will make more trips like those possible. We have lost too many community members to addiction over these past few years. More quality treatment options like Miklat is key to dealing with this public health crisis. Miklat is currently a small organization making a big impact and has hopes to expand their programs in a new larger facility in the coming years.
