Third Annual Running Water - Coast to Coast
Leading into Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada on June 21st, Running Water is inviting runners across Canada to run alongside waterways that has been used as far back as 12,000 years ago and is still enjoyed by many today.
As settlers, we have a responsibility to honour the caretakers of the land, the treaties and to work towards reconciliation. We’re asking runners to recognize the lands they cover daily and raise awareness water challenges faced by many Indigenous communities in Canada are complex.
In numerous Indigenous communities across Canada, tap water is not safe to drink. In some communities, the concern may be around infrastructure, for others source water concerns. And some communities have challenges with capacity and training. Infrastructure alone cannot solve the water crisis; the people who run the systems are critical.
Many Indigenous communities in Canada have identified the need for more young, qualified, and local personnel to support solving water issues, independently and for the long term. However, there is a lack of locally available opportunities for young adults to gain the relevant skills and experiences.
Water First is Canada’s leading charitable organization dedicated to working with Indigenous communities to address local water challenges through education, training, and meaningful collaboration. Over next couple of months Running Water will be raising awareness and funds for Water First. Stay for more details of events we have planned for 2023 by following along on our Instagram account.
