Ride for Rand

Ride for Rand is a cycling tour across Canada, inspired by the fifth year since my father, Randy Mercer's passing, and his wish for me to "follow my dream".

When Dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer in December 2011, I had just moved to Japan to live and work.  His death came suddenly and I was only able to arrange a short trip back home, after his passing.  Before I left for Japan, my Dad insisted that quitting my job and moving home was out of the question. He said that time was short and he wanted me to continue doing what makes me happy. I followed his advice; despite his death, I spent 2012-2015 living and working, following my dreams on cycling tours across parts of Japan and Korea.

Now in honor of the fifth year since his passing, I want to continue in his memory with a cycling tour across Canada starting in the Pacific and ending in the Atlantic. Following in his free-spirit and music-loving ways, I will be travelling ukelele in hand, with no set schedule except to return by September. Like life, long journeys like this can be challenging and full of unexpected difficulties, but through a positive attitude, support from friendly people and a consistent effort these hurdles can be overcome. 

For charity, I have decided to raise awareness for Victoria Hospice, for the kind staff who not only helped my father and family during the difficult experience of his passing, but for the work they also do on a daily basis to relieve the suffering of others. Hospice societies across Canada are often underfunded and my father would certainly be proud to raise awareness for them.
