Movement for Mothers 2021

Raise your hand (figuratively speaking) if you know a friend or family member who is pregnant or had a baby in the past year. (And yes, that includes yourself!)

Chances are, you can think of more than a few. In 2020, 3018 babies were born in my workplace (a large hospital in the BC Lower Mainland) - that’s an average of over 8 babies per day, or one every 3 hours (and that’s just at one hospital)! Clearly, pregnancy and birth affect all of us one way or another. In North America, we are so blessed to experience birth as something beautiful. 

However, for most women in the world, childbirth is a very fine line between life and death. 

The truth is, a mother dies every 90 seconds due to causes related to pregnancy and childbirth. The even crazier thing is that most of these are preventable deaths - deaths that we almost never see on a regular basis in North America, because we have the resources to manage and prevent them from happening. But in developing countries, moms and babies simply die… it’s become the most tolerable tragedy. 

This September, join us in a virtual fundraiser to support Save the Mothers, a Canadian-founded organization that works to improve the health outcomes of moms and babies in Uganda. This fundraiser will have two parts:

1. DONATE - from Sept 11-18th, share the news and financially support Save the Mothers. Donations will go towards COVID protection for healthcare workers, funding for their Masters of Public Health Leadership program, and support for community initiatives in local hospitals, clinics, and schools. 
2. MOVE - from Sept 19-26th, get active with us in any way you prefer! For every dollar raised, we will record exercise minutes on the Strava app - join our Movement for Mothers club!
