About Fundraiser
Fundraiser by Francis Hooper & Alexandria Maillot
Sarcoma comprises about 1% of all cancers. Sarcoma disproportionately affects children and is vastly under-studied. This fundraiser will raise funds to help in the support of patients affected, help fund clinical trials to better understand, treat and move closer towards a cure of this devastating disease.
Alexandria Maillot Bio:
Vancouver based songwriter and producer, Alexandria Maillot, was diagnosed with high-grade synovial sarcoma in May 2022. The discovery of a lump under Alexandria’s right collar bone three weeks before their wedding date changed the setting of their honeymoon to a hospital bed.
Music remained a refuge through the various stages of cancer treatments; even when too weak or ill to speak, Alexandria would quietly hum into a phone recorder, hospital ambience et al, hopeful that one day, they would have the opportunity to turn to those whispered melodies into fully formed sonic soundscapes.
After receiving intensive treatment (chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery), part of Alexandria’s rehabilitation has been learning to navigate the world as a chronically ill and disabled artist. It is through this lens that music has remained a safe house, where they are able to navigate the heavy burden of grief- from being diagnosed as a young adult with a rare cancer to losing new friends with a shared health history- to finding the beauty that comes in the in-between, the unknowing, and the nothing-is-guaranteed.
Francy Pants Bio:
I’m a Vancouver based musician in the band Doohickey Cubicle and previously Booty EP & Goodwood Atoms. I will be playing some songs I wrote after completing 50gy of radiation therapy in November of last year.
This cause is very dear to me. In June of 2023, I was diagnosed with a stage 3, high grade sarcoma tumor completely filling my right maxillary sinus cavity and growing down my throat. I underwent surgery in July. My cheek bone was replaced with my right shoulder blade, the roof of my mouth was replaced with my scapula muscle and I had a synthetic re-construction of my orbital floor that saved my right eye.
A year later, I am still completely filled with gratitude for my loved ones, amazing support network, talented health care professional team and my new lease on life.
