We would have been celebrating my son Benjamin's birthday. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2016. Ben was an undeniably thoughtful and sensitive 21-year-old.
For the last 5 years, my daughter and I have been doing a 12 hr walk on the Birchwood trails in Fort McMurray to honour his memory and to celebrate and honour the sweet young man he was! Ben was thoughtful, playful, a good friend and the best brother and SON and we will miss him forever!
This year, we will do the "Birchwood for Ben" walk along the RIVERWALK in downtown Calgary, where we also walked together a few times, and the Birchwood trails in Fort McMurray.
We do this because we want to turn our tragedy into something positive and raise awareness about the importance of mental wellness, the need to generate more conversations about it, and the positive impact of physical activity on mental health.
We are asking for two things, please:
1. That you take a moment to join us at the RIVERWALK anytime from 7 am starting at the Peace Bridge here in downtown Calgary or the Birchwood trails in Fort McMurray or from wherever you may be for a walk, run or any kind of a physical activity
2. That you donate anything you can to support the Fort McMurray or the Calgary mental health associations, and the links are provided below. Please join us on Feb 8th at the Peace Bridge in Calgary, the Birchwood trails in Fort McMurray or from wherever you may be by going for a walk, run or any physical activity.
Thank you!
