About Fundraiser
Fundraiser by Heather Colasuonno
Devon Freeman was a 16 year old boy who fled his Flamborough area group home in October 2017. Devon walked into the wooded area at the back of the property and died by suicide. No one saw Devon leave, and no one searched the grounds. Devon’s body was found 6 months later-still hanging in a tree- by some children playing who had accidentally tossed a ball too far into the woods.
There are three times the number of native children in the care of the Children’s Aid Society than there ever were in residential schools. Devon’s case is an example of the gaps, oversights, and failures in a system that continues to fail Indigenous children and families in Canada.
On the weekend of September 24 & 25, 2022, we will be running for Devon & all the Indigenous children who are still being recovered and never made it home. We will be finishing the run at the annual Chippewas of Georgina Island Powwow where Devon's family and community will be together. The inquest into Devon's death has been put off twice now due to Covid, and is to hopefully begin in September 2022. Last year we were able to raise $8,310! An article about last year's run can be found here.
We are running to support and raise as much money as possible for The First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada- a national non-profit organization providing policy, education and networking services to First Nations child and family service agencies in Canada.
I kindly ask that you:
-Donate any amount you can to The First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada- everything helps!
Or
-Come run with us and help raise awareness & support for Indigenous Children and Families.
Thank you kindly!
