In 2015, a small group of mostly Quw’utsun people who trace their lineage to the families of the village site of Xwaaqw’um (currently Burgoyne Bay Provincial Park), came together to reintroduce ourselves to the land. Buoyed by community interest, in 2017, we formed the Stqeeye’ Learning Society, an Indigenous-led nonprofit based on Salt Spring Island. Stqeeye' is governed by an Indigenous board of directors who are the decision-making body. Our mandate is to re-presence Indigenous people at Xwaaqw’um by bringing together and engaging Indigenous Youth, Elders, and Knowledge Keepers to continue and demonstrate the restoration and cultural practices that have sustained us through thousands of years. Our long-term objectives are to provide Indigenous land-based learning opportunities for Youth, create sustained training and employment for Youth in the field of traditional and ecological restoration and to focus on building community capacity.
