2016 Ecuador Earthquake

On the evening of Saturday, April 16, 2016, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck coastal Ecuador. As rescue crews continue to search through the rubble, the death toll has been confirmed at over 650 and it is estimated that over 2,500 have been injured. These numbers are expected to rise as search and rescue efforts continue in the affected areas.
A state of emergency has been declared by the President of Ecuador in all six coastal provinces — Guayas, Manabi, Santo Domingo, Los Rios, Esmeraldas and Galapagos. Roads have been badly damaged, bridges have collapsed, and power supplies have been affected. Thousands of people have been displaced, and some are left sleeping in the streets.
The people of Ecuador need our help. Several registered Canadian charities are now actively providing relief with the focus on first aid, search and rescue and support to first responders in these early days after the quake.
