Wigs for Kids is a non-profit organization that provides custom-made hair replacements at no cost to needy children who lose their hair through alopecia, chemotherapy treatments or other medical reasons.

When children lose their hair, whether as a result of medical treatments, health conditions, or burn accidents, they don’t just suffer physically. The change in their appearance can drastically undermine their self-image and sabotage their self-esteem. To combat this additional trauma, the Wigs for Kids program was established in the U.S. in 1981 in partnership with the Leukemia Society of America. It now has partnerships with Certified Cosmetic Therapists across the country.

In 1997, Carlo Turavani of Transitions Studio in St. Catharines, founded the Canadian chapter of Wigs for Kids. Since that time, Transitions Studio has provided hairpieces to more than 400 children, both locally and across Canada.

Each eligible child receives a custom-made hair replacement system constructed from thousands of hand-tied strands of human hair, then shaped, cut, and styled to fit the child’s head. Wigs for Kids pays between $1500 and $1800 for each system. There is no charge to the recipients or their family for the hairpiece, which is why donations from individuals and the community are sincerely appreciated to offset our expenses.
