About Vancouver Urban Ministries

Vancouver Urban Ministries (VUM) works with elementary-aged children struggling with learning difficulties in the poorest neighbourhoods of East Vancouver. Through our Rising Above Tutoring Program, we provide free specialized one-on-one tutoring during the after-school program at Xpey' Elementary School (an aboriginal focus school) and Strathcona Elementary School.

We use the tried and tested Orton-Gillingham multi-sensory approach to learning and all our tutors receive 46 hours free training prior to working with the children.

Without the free one-on-one specialised tutoring provided by VUM, these children would continue to struggle with literacy and math and would find it extremely difficult to graduate high school and find meaningful employment.

Through our Eagle Youth Music School, Vancouver Urban Ministries also provides free one-on-one music lessons during the after-school program at Xpey' Elementary school.

We also work with the families of our students through our monthly Family Gatherings and special events to encourage healthy study habits and strong family values and to share the love of God.
