United Way Saint John, Kings & Charlotte is a local, donor-funded impact organization that changes lives by bringing together people and organizations in private, public and social sectors to meet community needs and tackle complex social issues.

Someone like Jamie.

Jamie's childhood wasn't ordinary. With an unstable home and no family support, she faced challenges like a broken family, the tragedy of losing a stepsister to violence, exposure to drugs, and her father's legal troubles.

Leaving home on Christmas Eve, she found refuge in a group home.

At 17, Jamie found out she was pregnant and turned to a local United Way funded partner organization that helps young moms get the support they need. Despite feeling let down before, Jamie sought consistent compassion and support, which she found there.Jamie was provided with prenatal care, Healthy Relationships sessions, and counseling. She even earned her high school diploma with honors, receiving a scholarship and a United for Success Award (another local United Way initiative that removes barriers to success).

After giving birth to her daughter, Jamie pursued higher education and moved into her own apartment through a second-stage program that continued to provide her with ongoing support. This showcased her growth and independence and offered her secure, affordable housing. During this time, Jamie faced adversity, mourning her father and her daughter's father, but she pressed on.

Reconnecting with family and friends, Jamie built the network she lacked. Her goal now is to give her daughter the loving, attentive life she missed out on. Despite the odds, Jamie persevered and is on the path to success thanks to support from United Way Saint John, Kings & Charlotte.
