Located in Greater Sudbury, Turtle Pond Wildlife Centre is the sole wildlife rehabilitator for Northeastern Ontario.
In 2020 our centre unexpectedly became the sole authorized wildlife rehabilitation centre serving roughly 130,000 square kilometres of Northeastern Ontario. Our intake of wildlife quadrupled that year. Each animal has its own special needs for diet, housing, and treatment, and all of that costs real dollars. The pandemic has made recruiting volunteers and fundraising even more challenging, so we're thankful for the services CanadaHelps.org provides.
In recent years, Canada's wildlife has seen so many challenges - from climate change, habitat loss, and pollution - that wildlife rehabilitation grows increasingly important. Those who come across orphaned, injured, or ill wild animals find it to be an immense relief to bring animals to us, knowing that we will do all we can to help them recover and live their wild lives again. We believe that life is precious, and that caring for nature is important, and frankly, the right thing to do. We hope that you do too.
Turtle Pond Wildlife Centre is located in Val Caron, Ontario (City of Greater Sudbury). It was founded by Gloria Morissette - licensed wildlife custodian - in 2017. After managing another local wildlife centre for over a decade, Gloria opened Turtle Pond Wildlife Centre initially to focus on turtles and bats specifically. The closing of the only other wildlife centre in the area at the end of 2019 resulted in admissions to Turtle Pond Wildlife Centre increasing from 200 to over 800 animals in 2021. We expect those numbers to continue growing. We have treated animals from as far as Kenora, Timmins, and North Bay.
Turtle Pond accommodates many species of wildlife, and we strive to find transport for animals to other wildlife rehabilitation specialists when it is in the wild patient's best interest.
Turtle Pond Wildlife Centre can only exist with the community's support, and we are grateful for all contributions. Through CanadaHelps.org donors can even make a meaningful donation in celebration of, or in memory of, someone who loves the natural world.
