The Food Bank of York Region (FBYR) is a regional food distribution centre dedicated to alleviating food insecurity in York Region. We are a regional food access solution operating as a food hub and mobile food pantry for non-profits that directly service clients.
The Food Bank of York Region provides food to 70+/- municipal food banks and community food pantries, shelters, social housing cooperatives and schools in all nine municipalities of York Region. To meet the unprecedented increase in demand for food aid, since 2020 our Food Bank has grown its services year-over-year to serve 57% more food-insecure individuals and 76% more households. We are currently distributing food for over 37,000 individuals per year and nearly 14,000 households.
Food insecurity is a public health crisis that negatively impacts physical, mental and social health. People who are food insecure often have to compromise the quality and quantity of food due to a lack of money or reduce their intake and skip meals altogether. Nearly 30% of people affected by food insecurity are children.
