Yoga Outreach shares free, trauma-informed yoga with people facing multiple challenges, including mental illness, addictions, poverty, violence, or trauma. Our first volunteers began teaching incarcerated women in 1996.
25 years later, we've expanded to supporting:
- Women and children fleeing violence
- Youth and adults in mental health facilities
- People recovering from addictions
- People living with chronic illness or pain
Yoga offers individuals a chance to heal from trauma, which often shows up as pain, anxiety, tension, or overwhelming emotions in their bodies.
Our students start by noticing sensations. Gradually this leads to reclaiming a sense of control and safety. Once people feel control in their own bodies, they begin to feel safer in social situations.
Participating in group classes and interacting with trauma-informed volunteers supports our students to build stronger relationships. They can make choices that positively impact the direction of their lives.
Our trauma-informed programs provide participants with choice, a sense of community connection, and tools to draw from in order to self-regulate and manage daily circumstances.
