Since 1980, The Writers’ Guild of Alberta has been dedicated to providing a collective voice and meeting ground for all writers in Alberta, offering resources and opportunities that empower their creative journeys.
With over 1000 members from diverse genres and levels of expertise, the WGA is proud to be the largest provincial writers' organization in Canada.
Your support helps us cultivate a thriving literary landscape through an array of impactful programs and services:
- Professional Development & Networking: From writing retreats to workshops, webinars, and conferences, we offer countless opportunities for growth and connection.
- Youth Programs: We nurture future storytellers through youth camps and targeted initiatives that inspire young voices.
- Mentorship & Manuscript Services: Our mentorship program supports emerging writers while our manuscript reading service provides invaluable professional feedback.
- Equality Opportunities: Programs like our Horizons Writers Circle and Kemosa Scholarship lift up minority voices to ensure our literary landscape is as diverse as our province is. Our bursaries allow those who cannot afford it, the access to resources they need to thrive in the writing community
- Fair Compensation for Writers: We are committed to ensuring that writers receive a fair wage for their contributions. Through platforms like WestWord magazine, engaging panels, our annual conference, weekend retreats, workshops, and webinars, we actively create opportunities for writers to earn compensation while sharing their expertise and talents
About our funds:
- Bursary Fund: At the WGA we believe that everyone who wants to write should have access to the resources that help them share their stories. By donating to the Bursary Fund, you’ll help those facing financial hardships have the opportunity to grow and learn through one of our many programs.
- Endowment Fund: If you are interested in helping keep the WGA alive and flourishing for years to come, we urge you to donate to our endowment fund. The creation of an endowment fund will be a vital step toward providing consistent and sustainable funding for the WGA.
- W.O. Mitchell Scholarship Fund: The W.O Mitchell Scholarship was created in memory of renowned Canadian author W.O. Mitchell to continue his literary legacy. Its goal is to aid aspiring writers in developing their distinctive voices and providing support for their creative journeys. This fund supports our annual Mentorship Programs.
- WordsWorth Summer Youth Writing Residency: Support the voices of tomorrow! The WGA hosts a youth writing residency for young artists who believe in the power of words and storytelling. This can be a life-changing experience for young people with a passion for writing.
- General: Want to support the WGA but not sure which fund to donate to? This fund allows us to look at our budget and allocate the dollars to the areas that need it most.
Your donations directly support these initiatives and can be directed towards ongoing program costs or contribute to the sustainability of the WGA. By setting up a monthly donation, or giving a one-time donation to an initiative of your choosing, you become an essential part of fostering creativity throughout Alberta. Your contribution helps ensure every writer has access to tools that enhance their craft while strengthening our literary community’s unity and influence at all levels of government.
Thank you from the WGA Board of Directors, staff, members—and most importantly—the countless writers whose lives are touched by your generosity. Together, let's continue building a brighter future for Alberta's storytellers!
