Our Mission - Evolving Through the Arts
The Thompson T. Egbo-Egbo Arts Foundation is an arts organization focused on providing opportunities to youth in under-served communities. Our goal is to help young people build positive change and a sense of self-worth through art-focused educational programming. The organization partners with talented Canadian artists of various disciplines to provide opportunities to Canadian youth in challenged communities. These opportunities are designed to:
* Empower young people by exposing them to the arts and music through arts-based learning programs.
* Provide a platform for children and youth to build their confidence, leadership, and teamwork skills.
* Foster a safe environment for children and youth to learn and express themselves artistically.
* Create opportunities for children and youth in underserved communities to advance in music and the arts.
About THE THOMPSON T. EGBO-EGBO ARTS FOUNDATION
Thompson Egbo-Egbo is a musician and entrepreneur that grew up in Regent Park, a community in Toronto. He has benefited from the generosity of many people and organizations focused on ensuring children from underserved communities get as many opportunities as possible. As a result of the support he received, he founded his own foundation to give back and continue the examples that were set for him as a child. His philosophy, ‘Evolving Through the Arts’, is based on how music allowed him to develop as a person and added more than just the mechanics to be a musician to his life.
Through ‘Evolving Through the Arts’ the foundation has touched the lives of many students. One of those programs can be seen in ‘Listen to This’, a feature-length documentary that follows the one summer of our programming and shows how the arts can inspire and deepen much-needed conversations about life. Giving students one of the many tools they will use in life to express their emotions, it also shows how using the arts to teach opens up new pathways to learning.
As changes to his childhood neighbourhood Regent Park have been taking place over the past decade, Mr Egbo-Egbo looked for a unique way to tell pieces of that story. ‘Evolving through the Arts’ teamed up with Juan Baquero, the director of ‘Listen to This’, and seven youth from the community to visually tell this story. ‘Spectrum of Hope’, a piece composed Mustafa the Poet with music created by Mr. Egbo-Egbo, talks of a new Daniels Spectrum cultural hub. The project itself was generously sponsored by Daniels Corporation through their visionary CEO Mitchell Cohen.
The foundation continues to support grassroots community organizations such as Artscape, Dixon Hall Music School, the Regent Park School of Music and other individuals with tuitions to camps and advance courses to further their careers.
