Our Mission
The Stop strives to increase access to healthy food in a manner that maintains dignity, builds health and community, and challenges inequality.
About Us
For 40 years, The Stop Community Food Centre has been at the forefront of dignified, innovative programs that provide access to healthy food; build skills, health, hope, and community; and confront the underlying issues that lead to poverty and hunger. Our wide range of programs include drop-in meals, a food bank, community kitchens and gardens, perinatal and family support, civic engagement, and children and youth engagement.
We believe that access to healthy food is a basic human right.
Our Impact
In our 2022/2023 financial year, we've seen food insecurity in our local community like never before. Here are a few of the headline statistics from our most recent Impact Report.
- 21,570 individuals were reached through our food bank.
- In February 2023, the average price of our food hamper was $60, and due to food inflation, by September the same hamper cost us $85 to produce.
- We served 76,739 fresh, nutritious meals to the community.
- Our tax clinic supported 322 people with their returns, and got $680,000 back into their pockets.
- The use of our food bank by children doubled; from 225 in September 2022 to 501 in August 2023.
- Our volunteers donated 19,368 hours of their time - that's over 2.2 years!
