Join Us in Rolling Hippos for Water! A Virtual Walk for Easier Water Access
Water is a fundamental human necessity, yet millions of people worldwide—especially in rural communities—lack reliable access to clean and safe water. Imagine carrying heavy buckets of water for hours each day, just to meet your family’s basic needs. This is the reality for millions of people in rural communities, particularly in Southern Africa, where water access is limited, and the burden of collecting water falls mainly on women and children.
Rotary International has long prioritized water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) as one of its key areas of focus, working to provide sustainable solutions that improve water accessibility and reduce the burden of water collection.
That’s why the Rotary Club of Gibsons (RC Gibsons) and Rotary Club of the Sunshine Coast(RCSC) are launching the campaign: Rolling Hippos for Water, a virtual walk designed to raise awareness and funds for an innovative water solution—the Hippo Water Roller. By symbolically covering 1,000 km—the distance from Sechelt/Gibsons, BC to Calgary—participants will help fund hippo water rollers, an innovative tool that makes transporting water easier, faster, and safer for people in need.
Each kilometer costs $100, and donors can sponsor one or multiple kilometers. Each $100 donation fills in one kilometer on our virtual route. Donate as an individual, a club, a business, or as a group, and watch our progress grow!
The campaign will kick off on World Water Day, March 22nd, and conclude at the Rotary International Convention in Calgary, June 21-25, 2025. This convention will provide a global platform to highlight this urgent issue and celebrate Rotary’s collective impact on water accessibility.
