Overview
Phil Tippett is the founder and namesake of Tippett Studio. His varied career in visual effects has spanned more than 40 years and includes 2 Academy Awards, 6 Academy Award nominations, 1 BAFTA, 4 BAFTA nominations, 2 Emmys and the advent of modern digital effects in motion pictures.
As a child of seven, Phil was profoundly inspired by Ray Harryhausen’s stop-motion classic, ‘The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad’ and by Willis O’Brien’s classic character ‘King Kong’. His subsequent devotion to the creation of the fantastic creatures in film has become his raison d’etre. As a kid, and then as a student always drawing, sculpting and making animations he developed his skills in a broader context first with a Fine Arts degree from University of California, Irvine, then as an animator at the commercial house, Cascade Pictures, Los Angeles. As a young adult Phil sought out teachers and mentors establishing connections and friendships with Ray Harryhausen and Ray Bradbury.
As an adult, his career has been the stuff of legends. His pioneering stop-motion work on films like Star Wars and RoboCop helped expand the possibilities of science fiction, but they were only the first step. Rather than let CGI make his hand-made marvels obsolete, he embraced the medium through his contributions to Jurassic Park, proving his talents were in no danger of extinction.
We are thrilled to welcome one of the medium's masters for an artist talk about his career, as well as a screening of his decade-in-the-making (so far) animated series Mad God.

Tickets for GIRAF this year are Pay-What-You-Can, with a suggested donation of $10 for most screenings (and $15 for this special artist talk). Unlike many festivals, we don't charge filmmakers to send us their films, and we pay a fee to each and every short and feature we show, because we believe artists deserve to be paid for their work. Your donations help us cover these costs, and support us in offering affordable programming in the years to come.
