County Arts Walk for Wenjack to Honour Chanie

We will Walk for Wenjack to raise awareness of the history and impact of residential schools.

Chanie was an Anishinaabe boy born in Ogoki Post. At the age of nine, Chanie was sent to the Cecilia Jeffrey Indian Residential school in Kenora, ON. At age 12, he ran away attempting to reunite with his family 600km away. Chanie’s body was found beside the railway tracks on Oct. 22, 1966, a week after he fled. He succumbed to starvation and exposure.

Our team's goal is to raise $1000 dollars to support the Downie Wenjack Fund’s Legacy Programs by collectively walking 100kms. Consider donating $10 for every kilometre you walk. You can walk anywhere, at any time, but please walk between October 17-22.

Our team's distance will be added to distances walked by other individuals and teams to help St. Andrew's Church in Picton reach their target of 600km walked by County residents.
