Since its founding in 2006, EPFS' primary mission has been the delivery of an annual arts festival dedicated to the art of poetry: The Edmonton Poetry Festival.

The Festival is built upon the activity and history of the several individuals and entities in The Greater Edmonton Area that have made made YEG's poetry community vibrant and diverse. Through a blend of spotlights, showcases, and outreach activity, The Festival program celebrates diverse acts of poetry: professionals, students, rookies, the published paper poet, the microphone performance poet, the young, the elderly, the verbose, the brief, the public poet, the private poet... but the poet EPFS loves the most is the local poet.

The Festival is keen to intersect poetry into a wide variety of communities in the Greater Edmonton Area whether they be defined by language, cultural, age demographic, geography, etc. EPFS believes that poetry is an essential literacy that is accessible to all and strive to engage people of all ages and cultures – engage in poetry as creators and audiences. While the majority of EPFS work is found in the expression of The Festival, the Society also engages in its mission year round with special projects including its monthly newsletter The Magpie.
