The Circle

about

Indigenous-led, philanthropic adjacent and with a team of women, The Circle on Philanthropy (The Circle) is transforming the landscape by asking good questions, building community, and inviting wholeness, all while centering accountability.

As one of the only organizations working in the space between Indigenous philanthropy and settler philanthropy, The Circle has shapeshifted and grown since its inception in 2008.

At the time, an informal network of Indigenous and settler leaders within the philanthropic landscape started to emerge and recognize the value in more funding to reach Indigenous-led efforts. In 2012, The Circle became a registered charity, and a few years later the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls for Action release became a pivotal moment for The Circle. Because the philanthropic community wasn’t named explicitly as having a role to play in righting the historic harms and ongoing legacies of residential schools in the TRC Calls to Action, the network initiated the Philanthropic Community’s Declaration of Action.

CORE BELIEF

Indigenous communities have a long history of practices and principles on how to ethically steward resources. In many ways, our work with the philanthropic sector in Canada is relearning a way of knowing that is in alignment with Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and stewarding resources.

OUR WORK

The Circle works  to activate the technical and relational capacities of our membership. We seek to do our work in a way that invites a brave and courageous practice of thinking and doing differently. We invite our members to join us in this endeavour to dream into a future that increases Indigenous led solutions for systems change and increased equity, justice and self determination.
Our work alongside Indigenous organizations is to hold a space to amplify their wisdom, vision and solutions. We offer personal introductions to granting organizations, as well as technical skill and capacity building related to navigating the philanthropic sector.
We value our role as an organization that asks challenging questions related to practice and policy, we offer and participate in learning journeys alongside our philanthropic members and make the learnings visible for others within the philanthropic sphere.
