The Canadian Writers’ Foundation is a non-profit incorporated and registered charitable organization, founded in 1931. The Foundation provides financial support in the form of pensions and/or short-term grants to recognized Canadian writers who need assistance due to age or chronic illness. The Foundation currently has an eight-member volunteer board of directors, which meets in Ottawa, as well as advisors across Canada. The identity of writers receiving support is always kept confidential during their lifetime. Past recipients of financial aid have included such major Canadian writers as the late Dorothy Livesay, Scott Symons, Irving Layton, Yves Theriault and many others.
