The Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA) is an independent, donor-funded organization committed to defending the rights, dignity, safety and freedoms of all people in Canada. Our work is centred around five core areas:
EQUALITY includes equity, diversity, inclusion and access, and recognizes that every person is equal in value and worth, and each is deserving of fairness, dignity and rights.
FUNDAMENTAL FREEDOMS allow individuals and groups to express themselves, to believe and practice what they choose, and to exercise the right to vote, as well as freedom of association and the right to join a union.
CRIMINAL JUSTICE work ensures that constitutional rights are respected at every step of the criminal justice system, and that the extraordinary powers conferred to police and criminal courts are used proportionately, fairly, humanely, and only when absolutely necessary.
PRIVACY is increasingly complex and we bring a principled and rights-focused approach to assessing the impact of new technologies and surveillance, in areas ranging from policing methods to people’s public and private lives.
EDUCATION CCLA and our sister organization, the Canadian Civil Liberties Education Trust, provide free workshops, seminars, and in-class sessions in schools, educational institutions, faculties of education and communities, educating and empowering people about their rights and freedoms.
We know that individuals and communities in Canada that are already vulnerable or marginalized are often the ones most likely to have their rights and freedoms violated by police, prisons and the courts. We fight for the fundamental rights of all people, and work to create a country with more respect and justice for every person.
About us
The Canadian Civil Liberties Association was founded in 1964 and has been fighting to advance the rights and freedoms of all people in Canada for almost 60 years.
Working hand in hand with dozens of pro bono lawyers across the country, CCLA intervenes in court cases at all levels. CCLA is unique in that our efforts include monitoring legal, social, and current events, taking cases to court, conducting expert research, appearing before legislative committees, and educating people about their rights in classrooms and communities. Our approach of advocacy combined with litigation, public engagement and education helps change laws and lives over the long-term.
CCLA is an independent organization funded by caring people like you. Please consider joining our efforts for justice and rights for all people in Canada today!
