On May 11, 2019, the Caia Connection lost a founding member and pillar of work and inspiration. Joseph Khembo Alfazema passed away peacefully, with his family by his side in Edmonton. Joseph requested that friends who wished to honour him would contribute to help build new classrooms needed for the elementary school at Sete Montanyas (Seven Mountains). The school was built, around 15 years ago, to help traumatized children in the town of Sena, where so many families had been affected by HIV/AIDS. It's a wonderfully effective centre, warm and loving. Each day starts with the children and teachers all drumming, dancing and singing. Grandmothers provide breakfast and lunches. The classrooms are bright and beautiful, and apparently bursting at the seams - more classrooms are desperately needed.We were deeply touched to hear that Joseph was thinking of the beautiful Sete Montanyas school, and concerned that more school rooms are needed. But then, Joseph and Perpetua's whole life has been about service to others. What an honour is to know them, and to feel called to help them in their determination to bring hope and education to the people of Kapasseni and Sena.
