What happens to children with severe disabilities who age-out at 21 of the vital services they receive from the public school system? The C.A.R.E. Centre located in the old Wagar High school happens!
Did you go to Wagar High School? The C.A.R.E. Centre, located in the heart of Cote Saint Luc, is looking to connect with 1000 former students for their 25th anniversary fundraiser. Alumni are being asked to contribute $25.00 each and get the word out to their own networks so this gem of a program, serving those with severe disabilities, can reach its $25,000 goal. With these funds, they'll be able to continue their work and help combat the increased difficulties caused by the pandemic.
The building that housed the former Wagar Highschool for 40 years is now home to an incredible program bringing life to those familiar classrooms and the halls located at the far end of the school. This life-defining continuing education and recreation program for adults with severe disabilities picks up where school programs drop-off after age 21. Most program funding for children with disabilities is delivered via school programs. Once the kids age-out of the system they are cut off, leaving many confined to hospital rooms or group homes, with no connection to be part of something every day.
All of us are somehow part of a vulnerable group, but few can relate to what life is like having to deal with such severe physical challenges that limit ability to care for oneself, even in the most basic way or communicate with another person, as one would want to.
This program was started by parents of children with disabilities, not only to ensure engaged lives for their kids, but also to help provide the much-needed time for family members caring for children at home. Respite time for these family members allows them to be able to pursue paid employment to support their family.
This program, the dedicated people that work there, and the participants themselves are truly real gems! We must support such a vital program in our community, so that they can continue to shine brightly. Just a $25 contribution will help them reach their fundraising goal for the 25th C.A.R.E. Anniversary Wagar Alumni Campaign.
