SUPA Society

about

Mission StatementTo provide families living with Autism unique event experiences in a dynamic, enriching and inclusive environment.
SUPA Society was established in 2012 by Dennis Nerpio and Rip Curl Canada, originally as an event called Surf’s Up. The premise was to offer a unique experience for children and families who face the ongoing challenges of living with Autism. Based on Dennis Nerpio’s family experiences living with Autism, they spent time surfing in Tofino where his son took to the activity very well. The ocean’s soothing embrace allowed for development as well as a break from the day-to-day challenges facing his son and family. Dennis decided he wanted to share this experience with other families like his. He reached out to Rip Curl Canada and Michele Shilvock Lannon (BCBA) to help him achieve this dream. A year later, SUPA Society and their generous sponsors stood on South Chesterman’s Beach in Tofino, British Columbia with 12 families, the support of local surf instructors, specialized Autism therapists and the children were surfing and living the dream of creating a day to “hang 10” form Autism. Year over year, our goal continues to grow to 100+ children with Autism including their siblings.
