Our Mission
Our mission is to enable University of Alberta law students to provide free legal information and assistance to the low income community in Edmonton and to contribute to legal reform and legal education efforts as they impact on poverty law issues.
About Student Legal Services of Edmonton
Our Projects
The Civil Law Project assists with small claims (limit of $100,000), contracts, bailment/personal property, debt/collection agencies, employment/wrongful dismissal, sale of goods/consumer law, conversion and detinue matters in the Alberta Court of Justice and can attend RTDRS to assist with Landlord-Tenant Matters.
The Criminal Law Project has standing in the Alberta Court of Justice to assist individuals with criminal and regulatory charges; in making Rowbotham applications for court-appointed counsel; and in applying to the Parole Board of Canada for record suspensions and pardons.
The Family Law Project has standing in the Alberta Court of Justice. This project provides legal information and assistance with child and partner support, basic parenting applications, guardianship applications, and uncontested divorces.
The Human Rights Project is partnered with the Alberta Human Rights Commission so that SLS caseworkers can assist self-represented litigants before the Alberta Human Rights Commission.
The Trans ID Clinic seeks to assist individuals with the legal process of changing their names and gender markers. The Trans ID Clinic can help individuals complete the necessary documentation. Free notarization services are offered.
The Legal Education and Reform team creates legal information booklets and disseminates legal information through community outreach and presentations. They also research various poverty-related legal issues and legal reform opportunities.
Our Funds
The General Fund supports SLS with covering unexpected operation costs and improving the service delivery of our organization.
The Criminal Law Principal Assistance Fund aids individuals using the services of the Criminal Law Project with some costs associated with their legal matters, such as transportation to Court or criminal record checks.
The TransID Clinic Assistance Fund assists individuals accessing the TransID Clinic with the costs associated with the name and gender marker change process.
