The Student Christian Movement of Canada (SCM) is a progressive student movement engaged in faith and social justice organizing on university campuses. Since 1921, students have led the SCM in exploring and challenging the Christian tradition and its meaning in society and culture. With members from all Christian denominations and places of spiritual seeking, SCM seeks to build communities where friendship, critical thinking and political action can flourish. The SCM strives to practice anti-oppression principles – LGBTQ+ affirming, anti-racist, and decolonizing - and to create an environment where all are welcomed and empowered.
We are a local unit of the Student Christian Movement Canada centered on York University's academic and social community. We are a community of open-minded people seeking to engage with the intersections of social justice issues, faith and spirituality. We seek to provide students with the education, networks and intellectual and practical tools necessary to grow collectively and individually into progressive community leaders in the Church and in society at large.
We are open to all people, be they Christians of any denomination, persons from other faith traditions, spiritual seekers, agnostics or atheists. The common ground which unites us all is the desire to engage with the revolutionary teachings of Jesus of Nazareth from a progressive and liberal standpoint and to provide a safe space and supportive environment to others who also wish to do so.
