About Stewardship Pemberton Society
Formed in 2006, Stewardship Pemberton Society is a registered Canadian charity based in Pemberton, B.C.
In 2011, with the help of many partnerships and fundraising opportunities, Stewardship Pemberton Society (SPS) was able to fulfill it's initial goal of building the One Mile Lake Nature Centre. The Nature Centre is completely off-grid with solar power, composting toilets and rainwater collection. The building is equipped with a small salmon hatchery for educational purposes. The building was only possible thanks to the generous donations, grants and hundreds of volunteer hours.
With the One Mile Lake Nature Centre in operation, SPS began developing our interest-led nature-based education programs, simply called Nature Camp. Our programs are focused on science-based participatory learning, engaging children directly with what they are learning through hands on experiences. Nestled next to a wetland, creek, lake and upland forest but very near the centre of Pemberton, the Nature Centre has become a community hub for outdoor learning. The Nature Centre offers programming for 3-5 year olds in the Little Saplings programs and after school and spring/summer camps for 5-12 year olds. The ultimate goal with this programming is to provide engaging environmental education for children to instil a sense of place and value that will endure a lifetime.
Stewardship Pemberton has also run the Feasting for Change program for over 10 years - a project that has seen significant growth and interest as the need for local food security has increased. This umbrella program supports:
- Two community gardens with 125 plots
- An elementary school educational garden
- A secondary school educational and production farm
- A food bank garden
- A farm food rescue and distribution project
- A fruit tree harvest and distribution project
- A seed library and designated seed crop production project
- Composting, seed saving, and gardening events and workshops
Stewardship Pemberton Society's programs directly benefit the Pemberton community in abundantly diverse ways. From environmental protection, community outreach and support, feeding those in need, to food literacy and sustainability, the reach is wide and far. We work closely with our diverse community partners and passionate volunteers to collectively realize our program's goals and impacts.
