StepStones for Youth
In a given year there are an estimated 35,000 homeless youth in Canada, where nearly 58% of whom have been involved with the child welfare system.
In an effort to combat these alarming numbers, StepStones employs early intervention methods to address the specific needs and risk factors of this population. Established in 2004, StepStones for Youth (“StepStones”) is a registered charitable organization whose mission is to provide support for vulnerable youth who have experienced trauma, abuse and unstable guardian care with minimum to no support in their lives.
To create long-term change, we connect youth with mentors and support youth in educational achievement, securing employment, attaining housing and building long-lasting support networks through our Youth in Transition Mentoring Program. By taking a preventative approach, we foster stability and independence in these youth, thereby drastically reducing their dependence on corrective social services in adulthood.
We have four main programs:
1) Summer Camp: a rewarding camp experience offered to girls aged 6-14 living with a history of trauma. Girls enjoy the typical camp experience and develop their skills in swimming, canoeing, crafts, literacy, photography, robotics, and environmental and social justice education. We provide resources and opportunities to learn valuable life skills in a safe, supportive, and positive environment.
2) Youth in Transition and Mentoring Program: every youth in the YIT mentoring program is paired with two supportive adults:a YIT worker and a caring, thoughtfully chosen, long-term volunteer mentor. StepStones provide skill building, mentorship, education, employment, housing and counselling support to youth transitioning out of the foster care system.
3) Education Support Program: youth develop an educational plan and are supported in their educational endeavors. We run 1 to 1 drop-in tutoring sessions where youth receive assistance to understand and complete school assignments.
4) Homeless Prevention Program: youth are assisted with all aspects of housing searches. This program empowers youth in developing the skills necessary for independent living, guides their access to housing support services, and assists them in obtaining safe and affordable housing.
By making a donation to StepStones, you are powerfully impacting the development and educational success of children and youth who are both financially and socially disadvantaged.
