Spay Day HRM was formed in 2011 to address the undisputed cat population explosion in the Halifax area. We assist people of low income to have their cats spayed/neutered. Often these cats do not receive veterinary care due to the economic situation of the owner and continue to add to the cat population. We do a lot of work in areas of public/social housing and some of the most economically challenged neighbourhoods. We strive to over come the obstacles to having cats spayed or neutered. We make the clinic appointment, provide the cat carrier and the drive to the appointment. We return the cat back home and discuss after care with the owner.  We provide education to the cat owner on the benefits of spaying, neutering and keeping their cat indoors. We pay the entire vet bill. Often the people we are helping do not even have a telephone.

Spay/neuter is the only humane and a proven way to reduce the vast numbers. Pets who are spayed or neutered do not add to the heartbreaking tragedy of over population, and animal shelters are not over burdened with the unwanted animals. Spaying and neutering is also important to a pet’s health.

Since we started in April of 2011, we have spayed and neutered over 5500 cats. This has prevented the birth of literally thousands of unwanted cats. Our programs have been highly successful in reducing the cats population and number of cats in need of rescue and shelters. 

We rescue abandoned cats & kittens, have them vetted and adopted out to good homes. We are a foster home based rescue. We do not have a facility to work from. In March 2022 we opened a small a facility to work from that is a sanctuary for senior or unadoptable cats to live out their lives in comfort and safety indoors and it is a place for our volunteers to have a home base, conduct adoptions, and much more. Spay Day House is a very special place for cats.
