Our Mission
The Souris River Watershed District was established in 2020. It is an amalgamation of The Turtle Mountain Conservation District (TMCD) and The West Souris River Conservation District (WSRCD). Both organizations work collectively with local landowners in partnership with Manitoba Water Stewardship to maintain and improve sustainability within the District.
The Souris River Watershed District recognizes the important links between human health and watershed health. Through education, innovative leadership, community input and partnerships SRWD strives to manage the watershed as a complex sustainable system emphasizing prevention and protection programs.
Since 2011 and 2013 both TMCD and WSRCD have partnered with the Manitoba Burrowing Owl Recovery Program (MBORP) to help re-establish the endangered Burrowing Owl population in southwestern Manitoba. MBORP has three main goal that include promoting Burrowing Owl populations through reintroduction of owl pairs and young back into the wild in southwestern Manitoba, research to understand limiting factors and emerging threats the species is facing and education through public presentations and one-on-one meetings with landowners to discuss grassland conservation and ways to improve lands for Burrowing Owls.
