The Mid Valley Region has a long history of supporting health care for its citizens. A movement led by first World War Veterans Dr. J.A. Sponagle and Major Melbourne P. Neily resulted in the first hospital in Middleton. This was officially opened in 1921 in honour of Veterans of World War I. The new hospital was generously supported by local organizations and individuals, and this spirit of philanthropy has endured for generations.
Soldiers Memorial Hospital Foundation was established in 1972 to help purchase equipment for the hospital and support local health care programs. Since the 1970's, donations and bequests to Soldiers Memorial Hospital Foundation have allowed us to provide millions of dollars to support the hospital. The Foundation has been a key player in numerous community partnerships including the award-winning Annapolis County Seniors' Safety program, and is an active partner in ongoing physician recruitment and retention efforts.
