About the Society of Freethinkers
Established in 1992, the Society of Freethinkers (SOFREE) is an active and welcoming charitable fellowship of Humanists, atheists, and agnostics that encourages critical thinking, promotes secular laws and public policies, and cultivates a strong sense of connection and support among our members and the broader Humanist community.
Our Mission
To provide a caring and supportive environment for those moving away from religion toward adopting a secular Humanist way of life.
To inspire intellectual growth and creativity by hosting engaging events, offering valuable resources, and encouraging efforts to promote Humanist philosophy, literature, music, and art.
To develop a vibrant social community and outreach network for our members.
To be an essential source of recommendations for licensed and experienced Humanist Officiants, to help couples and families plan weddings, baby-naming celebrations, funerals/memorials, and other meaningful life events, with warmth and respect.
Our Values
Be ethical and treat people with respect.
We affirm human worth and dignity, and we are motivated by ethics and compassion to help others.
Think rationally.
We are guided by rational thought and scientific inquiry to find realistic solutions to problems.
Practice social responsibility.
By working together, and by sharing knowledge and resources, we can improve our ability to understand, nurture, and protect the wondrous and fragile world we live in, and set higher standards for improving the human condition.
Advocate for democracy and secular public policies.
Democracy gives every person the right and freedom to be heard. Secularism ensures that everyone is treated fairly under the law, regardless of religious beliefs or personal philosophy. Having secular policies in place ensures that legislative objectivity is upheld in terms of decisions on public health, education, and the economy.
Leading a meaningful and fulfilling life without faith-based beliefs.
This empowers individuals to live authentically and purposefully, guided by reason, empathy, and a commitment to shared humanity.
