Our Mission
Our mission is to enhance the quality of life for individuals 60 years or older who are alone or isolated in the community.
About Seniors Secret Service
We are a volunteer-based non-profit organization that has been providing cheer to isolated and lonely seniors since 1985. We currently operate three programs, two of which operate year-round.
Seniors Secret Service is working hard to ensure vulnerable Calgarians – seniors who are alone and isolated – are not forgotten throughout the year. In 2023, we were asked to help brighten the holidays for over 6500 isolated seniors, most of whom were low-income.
Christmas Cheer
Through our Christmas Cheer program, we receive personal profiles from 175 partner agencies, including – Bethany Care Society, Immigrant Services, Calgary Chinese Elderly Citizens’ Association, Carewest, Jewish Family Services, the Kerby Centre and Silvera for Seniors. These profiles outline the seniors’ needs and any special requests. Each senior is carefully matched with a community donor (Secret Santa) who purchases the gifts. We help people from all faith groups – our primary focus is ensuring isolated seniors are not forgotten. For some seniors, this holds extra meaning at Christmas.
Birthday Cheer
In addition to the seniors we support during the holidays, we expect to help 3600 seniors through our Birthday Cheer program in 2024 – brightening birthdays for seniors by providing basic care items like toothbrushes and shampoo, puzzle books, and snacks; each senior also receives a handmade birthday card.
Emergency Care
Seniors Secret Service also provides essentials for seniors through our Emergency Care program. Requests for basic needs arise year-round. Every day, seniors arrive in hospitals or long-term care facilities with only the clothes they are wearing—they desperately need socks, underwear, and toiletries.
We will also include something such as a handmade Thinking of You card or art from school kids to brighten the senior's room and let them know that someone cares about their welfare. The cost for this program will, for the most part, be covered by donations made to Seniors Secret Service. We anticipate a long-term stay package will cost approximately $300 per senior.
Funding:
At this time we receive no government funding with the exception of a casino fundraiser held every 18 months. We do not receive funding through the United Way. All of our funds come from corporate, individual, and foundation donors. Our annual budget is approximately $340,000.
