About SALT SPRING THERAPEUTIC RIDING ASSOCIATION
SaltSpring Therapeutic Riding Association (SSTRA) offers a year-round comprehensive therapeutic riding program for Salt Spring residents who are facing physical, intellectual/cognitive, and developmental disabilities as well as emotional/mental health challenges.
At SSTRA, our horses provide a “living apparatus” that challenges and empowers our riders, helping them to achieve therapeutic goals and feel connected to our community. Daily activities (depending on ability/needs) include grooming, tacking/untacking, and a ride in our arena or along a gentle trail. Our services are supported by specially trained volunteer horse handlers and side walkers who, along with the SSTRA instructor staff, make up each client’s dedicated “team.”
Together, our teams help vulnerable clients attain goals ranging from improved core strength and to increased self-esteem, empathy and trust.
