La Riviere & Community Recreation Association Inc. was organized in 1970 and incorporated in 1985 by a group of community volunteers who saw a need in the community. The organization has evolved over the years and as needs changed, so has the structure and facility. All board members are volunteers: professionals and retired. Until amalgamation in January, 2015, a member of council also sat on the board. A constant: one member of the original organizing committee still sits on the Board of Directors and is a very active and wise participant in all endeavors.
The Rec Centre now has many more roles to play than when it first began.
In a nutshell, initially we provided and maintained a meeting centre for the community and for surrounding area businesses and organizations,
we maintained a children’s playground and ball diamond,
we provided wholesome, recreational activities and programs for all age groups and
we are the EMO centre for our area.
Now, our programs and services are many and varied.
We host annual fundraising events such as 100 Club, the Community Fish Fry, TurkeyFest and Duck Race.
We continue with our outreach programs such as Hallowe’en Fun Day, Breakfast with Santa, and the Annual Treasure Auction and Bake Sale.
We rent our facilities to local organizations such as Boundary Trails Railway Co. and Pembina Valley Conservation District, for their annual general meetings and provide catering for them.
We act as the local coffee shop 6 days a week,
we provide free skating indoors seasonally 4 days a week,
and we provide special entertainment evenings such as concerts featuring popular entertainers like Scott Woods or Sisters of the Holy Rock.
Changes occur as the need arises.
Our venue now substitutes for some of the church activities after our church disbanded two years ago.
Although we can never take the place of the church and its many outreach programs we can host weddings and funerals and provide catering for these events.
As well, 2019 was our first year as hosts of the La Riviere Raptor Festival. We drew in 650+ attendees, who received our vendors and the information they had to offer with open minds and we received great comments from all who attended: patrons, vendors, volunteers. We were very successful financially, as well.
