Our Mission
The Rideau Trail Association (RTA) is a non-profit organization, founded in 1971 to preserve and maintain a hiking trail from Kingston to Ottawa.
The Rideau Trail is a cleared 387 kilometre hiking trail, marked by orange triangles, and managed by dedicated volunteers, with the cooperation of public and private landowners. Our mission is to:
- promote and encourage hiking, snowshoeing,
cross-country skiing and allied
activities
- open up, construct and maintain a series of
interconnecting trails between the City of
Kingston and the City of Ottawa in the general area of the Rideau Canal and its tributary waters
- establish recreational facilities for the public enjoyment of nature in its unspoiled state with a minimum of adverse impact on the ecology, and
- co-operate with other organizations whose
objects parallel or overlap the objects of the Rideau Trail Association and, where appropriate,to serve as a connecting link between such organizations.
All activities are open to the public, but we encourage everyone who uses and enjoys the trail to become a member and support us financially.
Information about our year-round hikes and activities is available on rideautrail.org
About RIDEAU TRAIL ASSOCIATION INCORPORATED THE
The Rideau Trail crosses terrain ranging from placid farmland to the rugged Canadian shield. It is only intended for walking (hiking), snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing.
No part of the Rideau Trail itself is owned by the Rideau Trail Association; the continuity of the trail is made possible by the generous permission of both private and public landowners.
Three hiking clubs of the RTA - Kingston, Central (Perth), and Ottawa - organize outings in all seasons of the year. Hikes usually take place on the weekend and comprise an activity appropriate for the season, such as cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter and hiking in the spring, summer, and fall. Other activities are scheduled during the week or on some holidays.
