The purchase of the echocardiogram ultrasound for Queen Victoria Hospital will allow echocardiogram scans to be performed locally. The machine being fundraised for, the EPIQ ELITE, performs general ultrasound scans in addition to echocardiogram. The total cost of this machine is $250,000.

What is an echocardiogram?

The electrocardiogram (a picture generated with ultrasound) can be used to monitor the heart and diagnose certain diseases of the heart – for example, damage from a heart attack, heart failure, congenital heart disease, problems with the heart valves, endocarditis and cardiomyopathy etc.

How will this benefit Revelstoke?

Each year between 400-500 patients travel out of town for this procedure. Having to travel out of town for medical care is a big burden on time, family, and safety for everyone. Local-based testing will mean shorter wait times and faster diagnosis. Purchasing this machine will also involve the hiring of a second sonographer for Revelstoke, allowing coverage for holidays and personal leaves, and on call coverage. Our population of 8500 nearly doubles on a busy winter weekend with the influx of snowmobilers, hockey groups, and downhill and cross-country skiers. We need to anticipate our growth and surges to provide the optimum healthcare – for all of us.
