Pelee Island Bird Observatory (PIBO) is a charitable organization in southwestern Ontario, created with the vision of making Pelee Island a unique part of the international effort to preserve wild and migratory birds and to protect our threatened planet.
Uniquely situated in a globally recognized Key Biodiversity Area, at the confluence of two of the four major North American flyways, PIBO's mission is to:
- collect and collate scientific data related to migratory bird studies;
- deliver public outreach education programs; and
- actively collaborate with avian organizations along the Americas flyways as part of a joint local-international effort to preserve migratory birds.
For twenty years, we have been gathering data shared with the Canadian Migration Monitoring Network, as well as participating in individual studies such as the Marsh Monitoring Program. As part of our educational outreach, we donate birding backpacks to local schools, libraries, and community groups; we distribute free window kits to southwestern Ontario businesses and homeowners to help prevent bird-window collisions; and we support the creation of BIPOC birding groups and the hiring of a BIPOC Campus Organizer to help make the University of Windsor campus a safer place for birds.
In 2023, we began two international programs: the Prismaticos Project, which collects previously loved binoculars in Canada and donates them to schools and conservationists in Mexico; and our skills-exchange International Intern Project which brings a graduate biologist to Pelee Island from the Caribbean, Mexico or Central/South America.
In all we do, Pelee Island Bird Observatory is committed to:
-ethical, environmentally sensitive approaches
-diversity, equity and inclusion
- teamwork, consensus, and collaboration
-gathering and sharing responsible and trustworthy data
- respectfully engaging with our island community
Give a gift that directly supports nature's most vulnerable citizens- our birds.
