Imagine a young child reaching up to open the mailbox. Imagine that child's eyes widen with excitement as they see a book sitting there and the child carefully reads their name on that book. The book is for that child! The child will rip open the packaging and run for their caregiver, crawl onto their lap and open this new and exotic book. Imagine them snuggled together, reading the story, pointing out the characters and talking about how the book made them feel. This is a magical moment for so many children. A magical moment with help from the Dolly Parton Imagination Library.
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a book gifting program that mails free, high-quality books to children from birth until they begin school, no matter their family’s income.
"Some of my fondest memories are reading in bed with my mum and it is an honor and treasured time spent each night reading and imagining new possibilities with my little one."~ Mother from the Dolly Parton Imagination Library
Serving the communities of Surrey and White Rock as an affiliate, Sources believes in this program's aim to increase early childhood literacy and increase reading skills as a child develops. Dolly Parton's vision is to remove the stigma of "being poor" for families who face barriers in accessing age-appropriate books. By providing monthly books to all children for free, each child will be at equal reading levels when they are ready to start kindergarten.
We currently have 251 children enrolled, and 100 children on the waiting list.
As our communities grow, the demand for our program grows as well. We have a waiting list because we do not have sustainable funding. We are looking to increase our financial capacity to bring the joy of reading to more children.
Our goal is to raise $5000 through the Great Canadian Giving Challenge. With this we could provide 55 children, between the age of 0 - 4, a free book each month for 2 years.
At a cost of $3.55 per book (includes shipping!), the value of your donation is endless. A child will love each book for years after receipt and look back with fond memories. Many times each book is passed on to family members, friends, even pre-schools. A book in a child's hands is never wasted.
"We love getting our monthly books from Dolly Parton imagination library and have spent hours reading them and asking questions and broadening our speech. Thank you imagination library."~ Mother from the Dolly Parton Imagination Library
